Overheard at the Shepherds’ Conference today…

“All liberal theology is an attempt to rescue Christianity from the God of the Bible” (Al Mohler)

Al Mohler reads an average of 7-10 books per week and sleeps an average of 4-5 hours per night. If you are scoring at home that is an average of about 1800 hours of sleep and 350 books per year.

A perfect day for Steve Lawson would be to play a round of golf with his sons, preach a sermon, kiss his wife and then to die and go to heaven. Not sure on the order on this one.

“Your job is to tar the ark! Prepare the people for the upcoming rain of God’s judgment!” Mark Dever to pastors

John MacArthur advised Mark Dever that Lloyd Jones and John Murray believed in a future for Israel. Dever also suggested that Richard Sibbes be added to Mac’s list. MacArthur also intimated that Spurgeon would be onboard as well. (MacArthur is recruiting an army of premillennial calvinists (dead or alive) who believe in a future for the Nation of Israel)

Al Mohler said that the Shepherds’ Conference has more wagging tails than any place on the planet. Apparently this is a phrase for Southerners, cause as a Yankee it is lost on me. Apparently it has something to do with us be happy Gentiles?

“Deconstruct false hopes…liberate your people from lies by preaching the truth…Serve your people by emancipating them from error!” Mark Dever

Dever’s message was off the charts. He walked us through Daniel (without touching chapters 7-9 :/). It was awesome. I don’t have time to unpack it; read Challies and get the audio for yourself or your pastor…it is a must hear!

On my way to hear John give the final message of the conference. Rumor is that it is part two of the eschatology message.

(I have had virtually no time to respond to comments, although I want to, perhaps tomorrow? We do not have WiFi in the hotel…)

“Al Mohler reads an average of 7-10 books per week”

Certaintly, that must be a joke. That is impossible.

  2. Mike Lynch says:

Actually, almost all older the Scottish Presbyterians(Westminster Divines) believed that Rom 11 indicated many ethnic Jews coming to salvation before the parousia. The Dutch(excluding Geehardus Vos who actually followed the Scottish view), however, seemed to follow Calvin interpreting Israel as “those in Christ.” This isn’t to say that either reformed theologies were premill dispo’s, however, to say that just because you see a future revival, as it were, for ethnic Israel doesn’t necessitate Macarthur’s dispo premill theology.

Actually, I forgot to add that the newest Amillenial book by Kim Riddlebarger follows the Scottish understanding of Ethnic Israel in Rom 11:25-27

    Erik,

I’ve been surfing the web a bit this morning, and just as I expected, there seems to be quite a passionate (almost angered) reaction to what MacArthur said about the amil position.
I’ve read many comments (which I’ll keep anonymous) about JM’s “gross misinterpretation of amillennialism,” a charge that “He should know better than to make those ignorant and gratuitous remarks,” and my personal favorite: “When there’s a Ligonier Conference with MacArthur in it, I don’t go. I can’t fathom how a partial preterist and an unscholarly premillennial dispensationalist share the same podium.”
    Let the fireworks begin!

“Wagging tails” as a Southern phrase? Not in Alabama. I’m scratching my head too.

  6. Tom says:

Mohler actually does read 7-10 books a week. During the “soap box” session friday night he explained this in more detail. He explained how he has a photographic memory when it comes to text. He also explained how he is a really fast reader, and actually reads every word and not merely scanning the words.
This is not the first time i have heard this about MOhler either.

    Tom…that is simply amazing…

  8. Blake says:

To clarify my previous post, I thought MacArthur did a terrific job of laying out the issue in a simple yet accurate way. But I left there very curious to hear what the reactions would be from “the other side.”

  9. erik says:

To make matters worse with Mohler, it is not like he only reads good books, his position forces him to interact with all kinds of verbal rubbish so that he may promote and defend the truth…this is even more amazing. If you have seen him live, he is able to draw from what he has read in almost a direct quote fashion without looking at his notes, it is amazing. As MacArthur says, “I’m glad he is on our team!”

  10. cavman says:

Spurgeon may have been pre-mil, but he clearly rejected the new teaching of the Darby-ites. He was no dispensationalist.

  11. erik says:

Cavman- are you painting all dispensationalists with the same brush? That would be as unfair as painting all Covenantalists as Catholic. Curious what your primary issues are…

  12. [...] Sorry for the sneaky title. Ligonier is offering a free PDF of some of their books if you agree to review it on your blog. After they review your…review…they will send you a free hard-copy of the same book you wrote about. I picked up The Truth of the Cross in PDF format and easily put it on my Kindle (look for a review soon). Then I realized that Reformation Trust doesn’t offer their books on the Kindle but they obviously have PDF versions readily available. This then lead to the obvious question; Why don’t more publishers offer electronic versions of their books if they have them? I realize there is a lot to the publishing world I don’t know about so please excuse my ignorance in this matter. I’m not just looking to get every book on my Kindle, I just think a lot of folks would love to have a PDF copy of the hard-copy books they purchase. This way you could read the hard-copy books on paper but also have the ability to use the PDF as a search-able reference document for later studies (not all of us have Al Mohler’s uncanny ability to memorize every book he reads).
