come, ye sinners

Last night at Crossroads we sang this song. It was entirely appropriate as we studied James 4.1-10. I love the lyrics; they are so true and so powerful. Our guitar guy (he goes by ‘the Tick’ in the comments) played this well; it was fast and strong. So good. Read, meditate, and enjoy as you find yourself comforted in Jesus.

1. Come, ye sinners, poor and wretched,

Weak and wounded, sick and sore;

Jesus, ready, stands to save you,

Full of pity, joined with power.

He is able, He is able;

He is willing; doubt no more.

2. Come ye needy, come, and welcome,

God’s free bounty glorify;

True belief and true repentance,

Every grace that brings you nigh.

Without money, without money

Come to Jesus Christ and buy.

3. Come, ye weary, heavy laden,

Bruised and broken by the fall;

If you tarry ’til you’re better,

You will never come at all.

Not the righteous, not the righteous;

Sinners Jesus came to call.

4. Let not conscience make you linger,

Nor of fitness fondly dream;

All the fitness He requires

Is to feel your need of Him.

This He gives you, this He gives you,

’Tis the Spirit’s rising beam.

5. Lo! The Incarnate God, ascended;

Pleads the merit of His blood.

Venture on Him; venture wholly,

Let no other trust intrude.

None but Jesus, none but Jesus

Can do helpless sinners good.

    There’s nothing quite like a theologically correct hymns. I am currently going through our hymnal again to cherrypick the greats to incorporate in our musical worship aspect Sundays. It is also eye-opening to see some of those that are painfully wrong. Here’s one that caught my attention, I had never read before….

    Free from the law – O happy condition!
    Jesus hath bled, and there is remission;
    Cursed by the law and bruised by the fall,
    Grace hath redeemed us once for all.

    Chorus: Once for all – O sinner, receive it!
    Once for all – O brother, believe it!
    Cling to the cross, the burden will fall – Christ hath redeemed us once for all!

    Now are we free – there’s no condemnation!
    Jesus provides a perfect salvation;
    “Come unto me-” O hear His sweet call!
    Come – and He saves us once for all.

    Chorus:
    Once for all – O sinner, receive it!
    Once for all – O brother, believe it!
    Cling to the cross, the burden will fall – Christ hath redeemed us once for all!

    Children of God – O glorious calling!
    Surely His grace will keep us from falling;
    Passing from death to life at His call,
    Blessed salvation- once for all.

    Chorus: Once for all – O sinner, receive it!
    Once for all – O brother, believe it!
    Cling to the cross, the burden will fall – Christ hath redeemed us once for all!

    Philip P. Bliss 1838 – 1876

  2. Chris says:

    How amazing the doctrine and theology captured in the hymns. Fernando Ortega does an incredible version of this rich song.
    Peace and God Bless,
    *Chris

  3. Armen says:

    Eric – In the first verse where is says, “Full of pity, joined with power” is it not supposed to be, “Full of pity, love and power”?

    I agree with Chris, Fernando sings this really well.

    Tyler – Are you saying that there is something wrong with that hymn?

  4. erik says:

    Armen- I checked the lead sheet and it is ‘joined with power’.

    I think Tyler is endorsing the song…
