A lot has been made over President Obama’s repeated demonstrations of respect to foreign leaders. Over the weekend the President bowed before Japanese Emperor Akihito and his wife. The White House assures concerned Americans that the President is respectful, deferent and mindful of other cultures. These bows are not statements of weakness but rather respect.

Regardless of how you officially react to the President of the United States bowing before one of his peers, there is something within you that clamors for your representative to be dominant and distinguished. After all he is the representative of you and he is the visual manifestation of your security, prosperity and enjoyment. Right?
At the end of the day we should remember that these are just men (or women). They are not sovereign or omnipotentant. They really are not regal. Furthermore, they represent countries full of people who are not all powerful or untouchable. We are human. And as much as we hate to admit it, we are weak and pretty vulnerable. People who tend to get upset do so because such actions tend to be at odds with their perception of who we are, and who they are.
This is a news story that causes me to be reminded and refreshed by my King. Indeed he is all powerful. He has no rivals. He cannot be defeated. He will not fail. He will not bow. In fact, when he comes to reign on earth all people everywhere, indeed even kings & presidents, they will bow down before him (Phil. 2.9-11). He alone is worthy (Rev. 5.11-13).
Just like the kings in the Bible provoke me to see their lack of Christlikeness so to my president causes me to hunger and long for a King who does not bow. Instead he stands to receive the praise that is due him as the unrivaled King of glory the King of kings.

OH AMEN!
I am reminded by the picture that the apostle John gives us in Revelation chapter 1 of Christ our Sovereign King. That’s my King, who on earth can compare to Him. The reverant fear and awe to actually be before Him, the joy to kneel in His presence one day…… This is to much for this man to comprehend……..
