The majority of college football teams open their season today in the US. I’m guessing that at stadiums like we have here in Nebraska there will be few if any open seats, plenty of crowds, early gathers, late lingerers, passionate & loud spectators, excitement on the drive home, fanatical boasters, and a substantial amount of rehashing and glorying in the work of the players.
O’ that churches would be filled early & completely with worshipers, late lingerers, passionate participants, humble slaves, and fanatical boasters in Christ who glory in his matchless work and love his church.
We (me & you) have a long way to go before Christ’s value is begun to be seen.

I can’t say I’m convicted because I’m an introvert and I feel much more passionate about God than football and the two get farther apart as time goes on.
Maybe some of the charismatics get it right in this regard if it’s genuine.
In any case we know that it will be this way in the new heaven and the new earth.

I remember when Herscel Walker had his number retired just before Georgia played one of their games. The statium was packed with tens of thousands of fans. Everyone was loving their hero, and Heisman Trophy winner.
He gave some thanks, and said a few things as the people cheered.
Then he said, “But most of all I want to thank my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He is worthy.”
The crowd cheered even louded.
Were these people all Christians? Probably most of them weren’t. But they were in the Bible belt.
But, you know what, I got goose bumps when Herscel said that, a the crowd cheered: Because Jesus Christ was being honored.
I do feel convicted some times. Other times I’m fine. And other times I find myself angry that football draws more attention and love then the Church.
Have a blessed Lord’s day and holiday.
Unfortunately many people have made football (and other sports) their idol. I know, I did it myself for 8 years when I was younger.
I’ve also seen a mass exodus in past megachurches I attended because the Cowboys game was starting at 12:00 and the Pastor was still preaching. They even set up cameramen to jump out and film people who left early. Really made some church members mad

Dear Pastor Eric,
Thanks for sharing this Christ exalting thought. I’m a pastor at a church plant myself and am humbled by my lack of zeal for the glory of Christ. Thanks for the spark, once again.
God bless.
