As a congregation we are memorizing the 5th Chapter of Revelation and then reciting it together on Sunday mornings. This has been a great blessing. In effort to aid that discipline I preached through the passage this past week.
The main thrust of the sermon is trying to convince us that Christ is both victorious and valuable. The images in the text are an assault upon the twin sins of living like Christ is neither sovereign nor glorious. Both of these errors produce lethargic, weak minded, joyless, complacent and earth anchored Christians. The bull’s eye is clearly on the mind and affections; in other words, what you think about Christ and what you feel about him.
The main sermon point is this, if you are going to live like Christ is glorious, then you must be convinced that he is worthy of your worship and love that it is so.
This may well be my favorite passage in all of the Bible. You can almost see the incense cloud of Christ’s own merit surrounding him, the Father’s pleasure upon him, the focus of heaven riveted on him, and the culmination of all things in his nail pierced hands. Awesome.
